Homework Explanation

This is an explanation of regular assignments in each subject.

Math: In 5th grade the students will be using the Saxon textbook.  Students will usually have a daily assignment that they will complete on an assignment template sheet. Each Saxon assignment will be due the next day.  Students will also do a variety of other things during the math block such as math website activities, MCA practice pages, and other standard based skill activities/ worksheets.
Spelling: The only spelling homework that students will have is to study their words at home.  We will do a different spelling assignment Monday- Thursday in class.  
Grammar: Students will be doing Daily Oral Language worksheets and other standard based sheets in class.  They usually will not have have homework in this subject, unless they do not finish their work during class time. 
Reading:  Reading Log is online.  Please have students record their reading log minutes on Reading Rewards. Information went home about this and students walked through the process in class.  Parents must sign off on the weekly minutes in the planner sheet. Other weekly assignments that will be coming home are Word Wizard, Read Works, and other reading worksheets.  At the end of every quarter, there will be a large project that the students will do about a book they read at the read-to-self station in class.
Writing:Students will be doing various types of writing and typing assignments throughout the year. 
Science:Students will be using a textbook for science.  We will be doing chapter packets, chapter tests, and various hands on activities that correlate with the subject matter. 
Social:Students will be using a textbook for social studies.  We will be doing chapter packets, chapter tests, and various hands on activities that correlate with the subject matter. 
WIN time:  Win time will be 45 minute block at the beginning of our day that includes the Nell Duke curriculum and PLTW.  These are cross- curricular programs that are hands on and allow the students to work in groups to solve problems.
